How James Arthur Ray May Have Stayed Out of Jail

As a person who has NOT been kind in my posts and comments about James Ray’s and his Sedona actions, I regularly receive email and comments from James Ray supporters and fans who feel I am judging Ray harshly, wrongly and maliciously. This post is to the people in the James Ray Camp. Specifically I want to paint a different picture that may well have kept James Ray out of jail.

In this picture we will assume, as James Ray’s lawyers and PR people are stating, the deaths in Sedona were a “tragic accident”, but not criminal. If indeed this were true I propose an alternate sequence of possible events.

Reports out of Sedona on October 8 & 9 would have been something like:

    • Speaker James Arthur Ray, presently at the hospital consoling his customers was heroic last night after after an tragic accident sent several people to the hospital and left 2 dead.
    • Ray used his satellite phone to call authorities immediately upon seeing people were injured.
    • In these initial reports, it would have been stated that “several people fell ill” during a sweat lodge. When authorities and emergency crews arrived on scene, Ray & his staff were tending to those who were ill. Rendering CPR, first aid and comfort.
    • It’s would have been reported that the JRI staff have contacted the family members and emergency contacts of all seminar participants and informed this what happened, the status of their loved ones well being and which hospital they may be located.
    • Ray has personally contacted the families of those who died and with the worst injuries and offered them comfort and offered to fly them to Arizona to be with their loved ones.
    • In a statement from Ray’s PR Firm, he is canceling his events until he is certain he has done all he can. JRI will reschedule them as quickly as possible. Ray will be personally attending the funeral services for those who died and offering his full support during the grief process. Ray personally request your prayers and support.
    • Ray has been and will continue to personally work with Yavapai County Authorities to investigate this tragic accident. According to YCSO Ray has personally facilitated the investigation by officials.
    • Seminar participant Beverly Bunn, an Ophthalmologist and Medical Doctor commented on how well prepared the JRI staff was. She stated her admiration to James Ray and supporting participants to ensure their needs were met. Bunn also commented that if weren’t for James Ray’s preparedness & actions, there may have been more injuries or deaths.

This would have been in the initial reports. Followed by pictures of Ray at the hospital, working with the survivors, several press conferences and interviews on Oprah & Larry King.

BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT HAPPENED, IS IT?

Ray probably would have had to cancel the 2 free events the week following the Sedona Events and would have held his paid event the following weekend in San Diego AS A HERO.

Had this happened or anything similar James Arthur Ray who would be the hero and James Shore may be alive and not a posthumous hero. To those who feel I am judging Ray harshly, unfairly and unjustly, all I can say is go look at the pictures of James Shore’s children and widow who lost their father and husband due to the actions of James Ray.

The irony is, had Ray acted with love and compassion for others, he would have made millions more in sells and been a media sensation again.

Instead, James Ray did what he did. He acted (and still acts) to cover his own ass and protect his self-help business. James Ray’s actions led directly to his incarceration. When James Ray lawyered up October 8 and stopped directly speaking to investigators, he acted like a guilty man with something to hide.

Of course it came out very quickly about the death of Colleen Conaway in San Diego about 10 weeks earlier and the Ray & JRI’s cover-up of this incident was one of the main reasons the YCSO bumped the investigation from an accident to negligent homicide.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I hear people in their discussions about the event who just want to defend him blindly. They have yet to do research, they like James Ray, “want the truth to come out.”

Thank you for writing this. It should at least crack their armor of ignorance but you never know.

No one likes to have their guru whom they have invested time and money with fall from their pedestal. This means they chose the wrong guru and the guru may have taught them wrongly.
As far as their “armor of ingnorance”, it’s impossible to awaken someone who only pretends to be asleep. In my experience, people have become too afraid that anything critical is negative and play childish games avoiding “negative thoughts” without understanding the difference between thoughts and thinking. The distinction between thoughts and thinking is evidenced by those who teach and practice “adding great emotion” to their affirmations and affirmative thoughts. While this makes it feel like your affirmations and thoughts are real, indeed your merely thinking and feeling, but not attracting or manifesting much at all.
To illustrate my last point, there is the guy in the Christian Bible who was known for his miracles and specifically for his healing abilities. There are no accounts in the Bible about his use of emotions during his miracles. He was quite, calm and saw things as he wanted them.
The older I get the more I realize that clarity of thought and mental control is all there is to the New Age movement. What I do not mean is your thinking, but your thoughts. Solve that koan, you you’re indeed heading down the right path.

      Terry,

The scenario you wrote was if James Ray took responsibility. I agree, if he did, then the resulting media and public opinion could very well be less harsh. I certainly would not be watching this situation this closely if he did.

If he gets convicted I wonder if the James Ray supporters will change their mind? I think too many people in the personal development industry assume the participants should take responsibility for their injuries, while giving Ray a free pass. Luckily, the Yavapai County Authorities aren’t interested in self-help and DIDN’T read Harmonic Wealth.

@Jerry – In me experience, people who patronize self-help products, services & seminars are driven to get the answers they want. If James Ray is convicted, they will find someone/something else to feed their self-help addiction.
        > I speak from personal experience having reached my self-help rock bottom a few years back. Hi I’m Terry and I a self-help seminar alcoholic.

          Terry …
Loved the post .. I did attend a James Ray seminar in Vegas 2007. Thank GOD …. I did not sign up for the entire $10,000 package at the time. I came home … wrote out note cards of James’ quotes … life lessons etc.
His fall from grace has been just that. I waited .. and waited .. and waited for him to accept responsibility.
Instead he sent his staff to meet with officials etc. Thank you God … for getting me OFF .. the path of Harmonic Wealth. James’ Harmonic Wealth does not seem to be helping him right now as he can not post bail.

Thanks for writing this Terry, I totally agree with ‘Detached Observer’ too. My thoughts exactly. And, as the ‘thought leader’ he proclaims himself to be, he missed a wonderful opportunity to SHARE what he’s going through with these (loyal) fans – without any admission of guilt, it would’ve been good to hear which of the methods he teaches are working for him at the moment, what’s helping him get through this from a spiritual perspective – and how he’s actually FEELING about it, instead of all these inane lawyer-speak press releases. In other words, his ‘students’ could really be learning from his experiences around this. No doubt his legal advisers have him pegged down tight so he doesn’t compound his ‘problems’ by opening his mouth in appropriately, but if he’d achieved only HALF of your ‘fantasy’, he would’ve proved himself to be the strong ‘warrior’ he claims to be, no question.

This is a GREAT post. In other words if James Ray was and responded like a compassionate, connected Human Being.. we would not be where we are now and he would not be where he was now.

James operates from massive ego and self protection. He operate with the principles of exclusion it appears.. us (or me) and them. One day James Ray might be enlightened and awakened. Maybe.

Even in such tragic circumstances it would have been wonderful to see such a compassionate and loving human being as you describe above. I don’t know *one* person who would have reacted as James Ray did in these circumstances. SHOCK OR NO SHOCK. Only a cold hearted narcissistic ego would have. (me and them) who felt fear would have.

James Ray has now created through thought and actions the ultimate separation between himself and others. Arrest and jail.

Human consciousness is evolving and the “us and them” belief and exclusion vanishing in favor or “you are me and I am you” and inclusion. Those attached to the unawakened separateness behavior will find themselves facing more and more soul searching episodes until hopefully, they wake up into Oneness.

Ray is now living the truth that you can not harm another without harming yourself (no matter how fast and hard you try to run and hide) because that other is really you and you are essentially harming yourself.

I joined the cause of James Ray “haters” (David Schimer’s name for those of us who keep the pressure going for truth) for the simple reason that James did not step up to the microphone on the day after the event and proclaim his deep sorrow and commitment to do everything he could for the people touched by this event. To me, it spoke volumes about character.

Rather, he ran home to San Diego because he had a flight to catch. (Like a ticket from Phoenix to San Diego was some HUGE expensive to replace.) He had such an urgent need to leave, he left his suitcases behind.

And not only did he not speak to everyone publicly, he hired a high-powered PR firm to “handle” his messaging. Was that a mistake, or the actions of an egomaniac who thought he was too important to issue a simple, sincere and heart felt message?

James has now taught the Law Of Attraction since this tragedy in ways he never anticipated. James is solely, and completely showing his 3-4-3 manta is true. Thoughts, feelings and action = results.

Go back through his podcasts and listen to the one with Nicole Witney and the one with George Noory. He talks about his near-death experiences and the exhilaration of not dying. I speculate that he was emboldened to believe that near-death could never actually go all the way to death.

I agree with you Terry, if James had done your fantasy list of actions immediately following the tragedy, the results would have been different. But instead, he went into defense mode indicating he believed he was guilty and would be charged. Guilt perhaps over the Colleen Conway death?

Bingo! Even if these deaths and injuries were unintentional, James Ray did everything WRONG in the aftermath.

He acted like a guilty person with something to hide, rather than the compassionate teacher he professes to be.

Sociopaths don’t know HOW to act normal. They don’t have a clue…They also think the the laws do not apply to them as they are above them..Thus Ray wanted the police to speak to one of his employees instead of him as he thought he was beyond having to talk to any one in Law Enforcement. The fact that Ray thought he was too important to even let his employees talk to him directly speaks volumes..

Terry, just came across your site. I am glad your wife had the sense to see what was going on and get out quick. It is also good to see you appear to be taking care of her and screening out the brainwashed people who want to attack her for what she’s done. I also support your idea of regulating the “self-help” industry. However, it’s going to be tricky, if the notion of regulation actually ever does get picked up. It’s the tip of a very big iceberg that a lot of people have invested a lot of emotions (and money) in.

The entire self-help industry is hard to distinguish from the “new age” movement, and in fact, Ray and others like him share many characteristics of so-called “spiritual” leaders of the “new age.” In a nutshell, these characters are everywhere (just about anybody who is advertising events at the Angel Valley retreat in Sedona, for example), and they are going to put up one hell of a fight if challenged. What marks them is that they always and without exception take ideas and principles that have a certain degree of validity and may even have originally been of divine inspiration, cut them off completely from their authentic sources, and lower them to the crassest possible levels: of making money, making up fake and deluded forms so-called “spirituality,” pumping up egos, and feeding on people’s insecurities. I believe the only way to truly regulate this is to bring together authentic and orthodox representatives of real Traditions (whether Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, or Native American, for example) and ask them to help come up with standards protecting real Traditions from the pilfering charlatans. Problem is, who judges who’s authentic? The scientologists might come along and say they are a real religion, for example (which they are not), and I don’t know enough about groups like the Hare Krishnas to say whether they are real Hindus or just a degenerated form of Hinduism (which I suspect), and so on. No question, it would be a headache – but I think if you could discreetly at least start to discuss the possibility with some ecumenical groups that have integrity, it would be helpful.

There are some useful signs to recognize what’s real, and this may help: people who claim to be offering spiritual teachings should NEVER be operating as a business (some fees may apply; for example, when I was married in a Catholic church, I paid about $50 for some kind of admin fee, and in Native American traditions, people may bring offerings or gifts to the Elder conducting the ritual – but this is different from having set rates with the aim of making profit). Furthermore, the people should be following a tradition that has been passed on to them by authentic teachers and they have passed through a rigorous apprenticeship or ordination process that is part of a longstanding tradition. They didn’t just read a bunch of books and attend some ceremonies and decide to hang up their own shingle. Related to this, they ought to be representing one tradition, not some mishmash of stuff they picked up here and there. Any cross-pollination of spiritual traditions can’t be just thrown together willy-nilly, the way James Ray does. It’s hard enough to really penetrate one of them. I think it would certainly take several lifetimes for me to understand one religious way (although I will say with confidence that I certainly understand them far better than James Ray).

One this is sure: James Arthur Ray has exposed the “self-empowerment” and “new age” phenomenon for what it is, and for that (and that alone), the world owes him a debt of gratitude. I wish you the best in your attempts to work at this.

Hi again Terry. i just came across this call for action on another site and though you might want to connect with him, if you haven’t already done so (cut and pasted below).

I respectfully submit that we (consumers and producers of self-help) establish the “Association of Self-Help Professionals” or whatever name seems most appropriate to elevate the professional and protect the public.

All that is lacking now is the motivation and leadership. If you consider yourself a self-help expert OR if you are a consumer of self-help products, I urge you to consider working together to turn the Sedona Sweat Lodge deaths into a legacy that salutes the virtuous work of the earliest self-help experts like Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale and Dale Carneige, honors the efforts of legitimate, self-help professionals of today, and turns the deaths of those who died in the Sedona Sweat Lodge… Liz Neuman, Kirby Brown and James Shore into a legacy for the betterment of the self-help profession and society.

Any help you can provide in this regard would be greatly appreciated!

James Arthur Ray’s contribution to Seminar Industry Regulation

Guest Post/Commentary Published By Request from “Write On”

    Hi Terry,

I don’t know how to add a comment to your Blog, can you post this? Or at least answer, or both? Thanks bunches! And keep on writing Terry!

Wow! This is the most comprehensive information I have found on the whole James Ray (and the seminar / self-help/ coaching industry … all in one place. Great job! And good for Amy for following her conscience right out the door of JRI.

I have a question for you – didn’t you attend seminars that were with a company built on the foundation of EST, called Landmark, or something like that? I remember having a conversation with you and another person in that group. You were very into the whole scene at the time. I was not. You were engaged in “enrolling” people for the group. Have you had a change of mind/heart? Correct me if I’m wrong. Actually, I bet you have no problem setting the record straight at you see it – I mean that as a compliment to your inner core of strength!

You are not alone in your idea of the need to regulate the seminar/coaching/etc industry. And I agree! Not sure what kind of license could be required for seminars, but surely there must be a way to make it mandatory for people to show their actual training and credentials. And yes, if they are going to employ psychological therapy techniques, they should show they have the training/certification to do so. Perhaps “coaches” of any kind should be held to the same licensing laws as counselors?

I have a Master’s of Science degree in Psychology. Not a Master’s of Art. Science. I worked hard for that degree, and had a lot of supervision during and after my training. Every professional field has the burden of being marred by idiots within that field. Psychology is not exempt from this dilemma. Hence: licensure. Even so, there are licensed idiots out there causing havoc in people’s lives. So I wonder sometimes if it is really possible to fully regulate any field that claims to help others. Ultimately, people will have to regulate themselves when they sign up for an experience (whether it is free or they are paying an obscene $9000+). But how can they do that without FULL DISCLOSURE? Doesn’t seem the attendees of JRI have full disclosure, nor did they receive their “waiver” in a timely manner!

Your Blog offered lots of reading… I was horrified by the “waiver” JRI attendees sign… AFTER their 3 day refund period. Yikes!!! I have never used a Waiver. Therapists are required to carry Malpractice Insurance. Ya know… in case of MALPRACTICE, in which case, the therapist must be responsible to the injured person(s). Certainly I would never expect anyone to sign such a blatantly irresponsible Waiver like the one from JRI. Yep, I bet the Attendees that went, even after signing, surely never expected to be baked in a make-shift oven. Where are his real credentials to conduct a Sweat Lodge??

So that leaves me wondering…. How DO we empower others using our trained skills but NOT charge money in order to live? I don’t think you are advocating that people work for free. You are decrying the greed attached to many so-called self-help seminars and guru type businesses, right? I want to work to help others. You work to help others. We all need to be paid for our work and held accountable for what we do.

Keep writing! Thanks for all your hard work on your Blog!

@Write On, Thanks for your contribution.
      1) Yes, I have participated in Landmark Education in the past in various capacities.
      2) Regarding compensation: I feel people should be compensated for the value they add in proportion to what the market feels was added (In other words, let the market determine the value/worth). I do not recall having commented on James Ray or JRI charging too much for their programs. I do want one sided contracts, no-refunds, non-disclosure of credentials and curriculum changed, fully disclosed and regulated for consumer protection.
      3) You ask: How do we empower others? IMO, we can’t empower others. We can encourage, educate, teach, recommend, advise, support and/or influence others. But empowerment is up to the each individual who is on their own journey or pathway. I arrogantly thought I could empower others and thought that I knew what’s best for other people. I was wrong. If “empowering” others was possible, there would be methods which would deliver 100% success rates. There are not such methods.
      4) To help others, I personally recommend that you “practice what you preach” and lead your life as an example of your beliefs which will attract people to you who ask for your assistance. Help those people. Every mistake I’ve made (which there have been many) is when I’ve tried to take a short cut, follow something from a book, seminar or coach which did not agree with my values. I’ve mentioned Post Seminar Stress Disorder “PSSD” in a previous post and many people experience trauma or access past trauma in these seminars with no one qualified to manage what is created or dredged up. Which has for me led to very bad decisions, mistakes and damage (financially and relationally). As such, I no longer participate in any type of self-help or personal growth seminars – IMO they don’t work for the majority of people. The biggest gift anyone can give another is unconditional love and acceptance of who the other person is and is not.

Personally I *do* think James Ray charged too much for his seminars. The market beared his prices only because he uses highly aggressive and manipulative sales tactics, sales tactics that professional therapists are barred from using to get clients or else risk losing their license.

But it’s not simply a case of charge $9695 or nothing. The middle path most professionals in private practice take is to charge a reasonable fee and/or take insurance to help cover that fee. Similarly, seminars that charge more reasonable fees tend to be less aggressive in their sales pitches and psychological techniques.

@Duff thanks for stopping by. I personally think JAR’s price of admission was too high – hell, I refused to go for free (as a spousal perk for JRI employees). But, I’m basically a Libertarian and feel that the price is what the market will bear (for all products and services). Western culture, especially Americans seem to love high price tags and going into debt to pay them. Before James Ray killed 3 in Sedona and 1 in San Diego, no one seemed to care about Seminar Industry Business Practices. Awareness is the first step in change. Look at how Rich Dad & Kiyosaki were exposed in Canada. Which I am certain will be the first of many that bring to light Self Help & Seminar Industry Practices. This will be similar to Health Club Memberships, Real Estate & Mortgage Regulation & Securities Regulation. To paraphrase a long runnung ad: When Seminars Kill, People Listen.
BTW: I have not found that search algorithm yet. I’m still looking (filing ain’t my best skill).

Great guest blog, and love the comments that follow. I think that the JAR events has the media on “higher alert” hence the Robert Kiyosaki exposure (see my blog post at theflawofattraction.com/robert-kiyosaki-under-the-canadian-gaze/). I think we’ll be seeing more and more of that. Interesting bit about a woman named Janaki and her experience with Byron Katie. The PDF doc has disappeared, but an html version still survives. janakisblog.wordpress.com/about/ Turns out they all use similar tactics. Intense marketing, a ripping down of you identity, and a promise of successful reconstruction if you pay the (high) fees.

    • Yakaru 4:27 pm on February 2, 2010 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Ray says his prices are fair because people pay according to the value they feel they receive. Using that logic, he should also accept compensation claims according to the amount of damage people feel he has done to them.

I agree with Duff that he uses aggressive and manipulative tactics, and would add that through his fame he has been in the position of being able to more ruthlessly sift through thousands of people and lead the willing (and able to pay) step by step into accepting his terms.

The whole culture of the self help industry is set up to allow such blatant exploitation, to squash criticism, to encourage cross-promotion. The only standard for quality is financial success, and the only standard for ethics is what you can get away with. Anyone who doesn’t sink to those depths does so of their own accord, and at their own expense.

(Those who walked out of JRI recently – not mentioning any names! – actually did the company a great service, showing the public that the company was staffed by some people with integrity who sincerely believed in what they were doing.)

A few simple laws would fix things:
      - any waivers or agreements must be signed before the refund date passes
      - use of physically and psychologically dangerous activities must be acknowledged before the refund date
      - adequate numbers of trained staff must be on hand at all times and for a week after
      - deaths during a seminar should be reported and explained to police and immediate family, and maybe something about not cooking or suffocating people should be in there too.

The self-industry could police itself a bit better by encouraging people who have real qualifications to add “really!” after listing their PhD, and refering to their less well endowed colleagues with a “not really”. Or something. Stick it to ‘em, guys – people like Joe Vitale PhD, or Bob Procter, Scientist, or James Ray, Philosopher, are just making those with real quals look silly.

Consumers could protect themselves with a few simple rules: ignore testimonials completely, google the person or product + scandal, be aware of the way the inevitable hierarchy and power structures work, including the teacher’s conflicts of interest, and avoid anyone who so much as mentions quantum physics.

Thank you Terry for posting my questions. Your comment and the other comments that follow were helpful.

A rose is a rose by any other name… semantics.. “empower”…
I like your take on the word. I have used the word empower for a long time, meaning to support others as they claim their own inner-authority and self responsibility. After reading your comments, I am changing my use of the word “empower” NOW. Just goes to show; we have something new to learn in every moment :-)

I agree, Waivers should spell out all potential activities and their respective possible dangers. Being over heated and quite possibly cooked in a tarp covered “sweat lodge” counts as a BIG disclosure item.

Thank you for your hard work on your postings. And thank you to your respondants. This is turning out to be one of the best sites to learn about what’s really going in my own field!!

FYI: I signed up for an email thing on someone’s site who turned out to be connected to all the various networking people of The Secret. Suddenly I was on a number of their email lists (must have abeen a TINY little disclosure at the very botttom of some email that I first responded to. In short, it took a long time to get off all the email lists. Some still get through. They use the very same format of videos and newsletters. For a fee, you can do the same and be ‘empowered’ by their network of e-lists.

Terry you spoke of the monetary value of JRI’s email list. Well, that same list is shared in part by Bob Proctor, et all of The Secret fame. Multi-level marketing and networking disguised as “ancient truth bearers”. I really got suckered in, but thankfully got out before signing up for a human
      cook-out in the desert.

      Keep on writing!

@Write On It was my pleasure to post your comments. I’m happy to see you’ve learned how to add a comment.
        > Regarding Lists: Most of the time these are called JVs or Joint Ventures. Pat of the disclosure I want to see is regarding financial relationships between parties. This may well be covered in the Dec 1 FTC suggestions, but there have been no test cases to set a precedent.
        > Much of what groups like TLC do is allow the Seminar Companies to network for the purpose of forming JVs and Strategic Alliances. This is good business, except when full disclosure is not given.

Melinda Martin Responds to James Arthur Ray White Papers

melinda-martinMelinda Martin is named in the James Arthur Ray white papers. The documents were prepared by Ray’s legal council and states that Martin is wanting money from Ray. We asked Melinda if it was true. Here’s what she said.

    1. Melinda Martin did ask JRI to provide her an attorney. JRI never responded.
    2. Megan Fredrickson filed a worker’s compensation claim for Melinda Martin without Martin’s knowledge. Martin learned of this when contacted for an interview about her disability. Martin declined Worker’s Compensation. Martin does not have a worker’s compensation lawyer.
    3. Martin has not requested monetary compensation from JRI.
    4. Martin has not received compensation from any of the news interviews where she has appeared.
    5. Melinda Martin was trained in CPR.

As James Ray’s possible indictment looms near and the Death Ray Defense unfolds, I’m amazed by my naivety. I’m in my late 40s and still feel our legal system should be about what’s right and the truth and not some Golden Rule of Justice (he with the Gold gets the justice).

My wife Amy Hall worked for James Ray for almost 2 years. Like so many people, she wanted to believe that James Arthur Ray was a man who practiced what he preached. Amy worked for Ray to help people have a better and more fulfilled life. After James Ray killed 4 people during his self-help seminars, she realized that all he cared about was making money. Amy is questioning everything about what happened and why it happened. Amy is especially angry as she watches James Ray working so hard to cover his own ass instead of “transforming the planet” as he claimed he wanted to do.

At this time, Amy is not accepting any media requests.

My personal note on the matter. If these deaths were really an accident, why is James Arthur Ray acting so much like John Gotti? According to the twitter quotebots: James Arthur Ray is credited with saying “The content of your thoughts and personal beliefs can be proven by a single indicator – your current results.” Mr Ray, based on your current results, your thoughts and personal beliefs all point to the fact that you know your actions directly caused the deaths of 4 people and the deaths were not accidental.

Overall I didn’t think the “whitepapers” were that bad :: given that they were written by a criminal attorney in defense of super-dang-guilty client. But the shots at Melinda were total bullshit. “Here’s what you get for talking” intimidation tactics.

      Ghetto!

Terry, as a former employee also, I am struggling with why more people who attended the event aren’t coming forward and DEMANDING justice. We are not privy to all the evidence, statements, etc and it may be that some people have done so. But, there have been too many statements made by the “sheeple” about how James was not responsible and how even though he intimidated them to act recklessly, they did so of their own volition. In addition to the apparent “mis-statements” about Melinda Martin, there were other untrue statements made in the white papers. For example, in the rendition about Colleen Conaway, the attorneys say that no one from JRI knew of her whereabouts but it has been recently reported that Greg Hartle not only witnessed the tragedy, he twittered about it and has since had his tweets removed. Even though statements are being made by Arizona prosecutors that this would be a difficult case to take to a jury, I am still hanging on to my belief that James will be made to answer for his actions this time.

Hi Hope, I trust you’re doing well. Ray’s letters to the Yavapai County Attorney are prime examples of our legal system at work. A system where each side gets to state their side of the story. A mentor of mine once shared the story about how a good criminal attorney was his client. The attorney was bragging one night that if he has a client who is innocent, he will have a judge hear the trial with out a jury. But, if the client is guilty they have a jury trial. If indicted, I wonder which James Ray will request?

What are you guys going to do if he doesn’t get charged for anything? This blog would have been a waste of time. Why do you continue to follow this stuff? If you and your wife hate James that much, why not rid yourself of him? Instead you follow it 24/7 like you have no other stories to tell! You won’t have anything left after it’s all cleared up.

It’s amazing how you put your wife out there. “she’s not taking interviews at this time”…I call bullshit! If the right amount of money came in, you’d be all over an interview. What’s funny is that you have three people (Amy, hope and Melinda) coming out about how they are former employees and basically bash the company. Why arent the rest of his employees coming out? If his company was THAT bad….wouldn’t they be saying something as well?

@melanie thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comments.
You call bullshit on a topic you know nothing about. I can not speak for Hope or Melinda, but I can share with you why Amy is speaking out. She has seen too many people hurt financially, emotionally and physically by the self-help and personal transformation industry. When a guru’s profits and personal wealth take front seat to the safety and well being of their clients, something has to change. Amy wants to make sure change happens and Seminars and Coaches are regulated.
As far as hating James Arthur Ray, we do not hate him only his results. Ray is on his path, but happens to be the seminar schmuck who killed 4 people during his seminars. Amy worked for said schmuck when this happened. She quit the day after JRI informed the staff they would be doing business as usual. Amy has seen behind the Wizard’s Curtain and personally experienced JRI’s business, systems and did 3 of their programs. Amy wants to make sure the curtain is removed so customers can know what they are buying from a seminar companies or coaches.
Amy knew both Liz & Kirby and she took their deaths personally. Amy is also a very compassionate mother and grandmother who is outraged at the actions of James Ray which left 3 young children fatherless. Amy is committed that children never lose a parent in the name of self-help or personal transformation ever again.
I can not speak as to why other JRI employees are not saying anything. I personally know that in the “confidentiality agreement” that JRI claims Amy signed there is a “$100,000 liquidated damages” clause which stipulates that at their discretion JRI can demand $100,000 for divulging any information they feel damages JAR. This may be the reason for their silence.
You ask what we will do if JAR is not indicted. That’s easy, keep the unfair business practices of the seminar industry in the foreground and chipping away at seminar regulation.
We personally feel that seminars and coaching can be beneficial. Our personal agenda is seminar and coaching reform to legitimize what seminars offer with full disclosure for seminar methods and techniques as well as guru credentials.

      @Melanie

I was not a follower of James Ray, but I did read some of his books and listened to his audio offerings. I had heard he was really good, so I gave it a try. After a fair amount of time, I stopped reading his emails and listening to his teleconference calls or audio interviews because the guy just was too “plastic” for me. I mean really, how many times does a person have to hear ” going three-for-three” before they say, got it.

When I heard about the deaths in Sedona, I was deeply saddened. It became very clear to me that James Ray was not qualified to take those people into that sweat lodge and do the things he was doing. And so many people looked the other way because James really was very good at puffing up a rather weak resume.

The “Death Lodge White Papers” do a really good job of contrasting his actual training background with the hype. The attorneys intentionally used James Ray’s actual training–(AA degree, worked for AT&T, consultant, no religious training, blah, blah)to make him look ordinary. But if you replay one of the many videos on YouTube and hear James tell it, he was God’s gift to corporate America. (Oh, and did you know he was on Oprah and Larry King?)

Therein lies the problem. No credentials. James took people into situations that compromises their safety. Not just their physical safety, their emotional safety. For example, I was struck by the fact that in the sheriff’s documents are discussions of someone at the event who revealed a childhood trauma and had some worry about that information being revealed. That poor woman, the details are publicly available now because James Ray refuses to take responsibility.

Think about that for a moment, @Melanie. James Ray’s actions to date forced the sheriff to have to release those documents. James was the one who wanted to play full on in the public media by hiring (and firing) Howard Bragman (spokesman to the stars). And I won’t even go on about the cowardice it showed that James hightailed it out of Arizona leaving his bags behind.

So @Melanie, you can talk smack but those of us who want to see some regulation rely on people like Terry and Amy dedicating time to getting the facts out on the table. Otherwise, unregulated schmoes like James Ray will continue to sell self-help seminars for which they are not qualified to teach.

@TSarten very nicely put. Amy & I thank you for your acknowledgment. We never thought we would be wanting self-help industry regulation when assisting for Landmark Education Seminars in Newport Beach. Heck most of our wedding guests were the who’s who of the NPB center.
But the seminar industry is out of control and unwilling to self-regulate. The lure & promise of a share of the $11,000,000 a year in an industry where you get to make up your own rules attract people like James Ray who slam together products and seminars for the sake of having more to sell. Short cuts are being taken that endanger people emotionally and physically.
I’ve compared James Ray to a repeat drunk driving offender which I still hold as valid. But consider if James Ray was the Jump Master of a parachuting school with the same safety record of injuries and deaths. He would be shut down and most likely criminally charged by statute.
James Ray, like most Seminar Gurus consider their waivers of liability as their “Get out of Jail Free Card”. But here is the difference, signing a waiver of liability for a parachuting class is a larger assumption of presumed risk than a 5 day seminar/spiritual retreat which “may include” a sweat lodge (2 hours @ 100+ degrees). It is not reasonable to assume his customers had any clue as to the risks he asked them to assume.

@Terry – If your wife didn’t like the company, why didn’t she quit when she first started? That’s what smart people do, isn’t it? If you don’t like an environment from the get-go, you get out of it. You don’t stay there. What made her stay there? that’s what I don’t get.

I find it hilarious that you decided give out James’ email address. How good did that make you feel? Just like your wife receiving threats from ex-employees, think about the messages that James got. I’m sure his were worse than what your wife got. Do you guys feel vindicated when something bad happens to people? Especially James? I guess you don’t care who you’re hurting unless it isn’t you or your wife.

How do you feel about the people who are supporting him?

        @Melanie – I’m glad I’ve made you laugh.
As I have said many times, I have no negative feelings or ill will toward James Ray, his followers or former employees. Ray just happens to be the seminar schmuck who killed 4 people. If Ray or anyone else for that matter is “hurt” by my words, then I suggest he/she/they “Get Over It” (and yes I am waving 3 fingers at the screen).
The only people I want to see vindicated in this matter are the families of those who died.
Regarding Amy’s tenure @JRI, all I can say is she did what was right for her to do until James Ray and JRI crossed the line with their lack of humanity and human decency. Most people can and do put up with a lot of shit in the work place and stick it out for their own personal reasons. I feel this is what Amy did right up to the time she realized the true nature of the company and man she worked for. It’s one thing to not issue refunds but it’s quite another thing to kill 4 customers and continue to do business as usual. That was the line for Amy.

@Terry – you guys make it seem like he killed these people on purpose. That’s what’s confusing to me. And for your wife to call the police because she thought they were going to burn all of the stuff related to Spiritual Warrior….what the hell? I mean seriously, I doubt people working at that office would have done that. Did they ask her to do that? Um, I doubt it. And you talk about the employees signing NDA’s. Didn’t your wife sign one and aren’t you worried that you guys could get sued for the $100,000? I mean you already got a cease and desist letter.

Regarding your other questions, I will not answer those here.

Something is Conspicuously Missing from James Arthur Ray / JRI Disclaimers & Waivers

James-Arthur-Ray_Grim_ReaperNo Where in the Spiritual Warrior Waivers and Disclaimers is it mentioned that it was James Ray’s intention in the Spiritual Warrior Seminar to take customers to the brink of death for an Out of Body type Spiritual Experience. James Ray decided and planned for this “good day to die” long before his customers showed up in Sedona.  He orchestrated a 5 day seminar to take them there.

He did NOT inform them when he took their money of his plans to endanger their lives. When he finally did tell his customers that he may be planning a sweat lodge, he did not disclose his plans to take them to the brink of death! Ray’s Spiritual Warrior Seminar was his own personal version of Flatliners and he assumed as all Gods Do, that he knew what was best for other human beings.

When JRI customers were informed that they had bought a “spiritual seminar” involving the fictitious character Carlos Casteneda which “may” include a vision quest & sweat lodge it was well after their refund period. When customers want a refunds, the seminar & self-help industry really shines. They “coach” you. In this context, coaching is a persuasive technique that supposes that the customer actually knew what they were doing when they bought the product or seminar. The presumption is that the customer’s “unconscious mind” would not have allowed the person to buy the seminar unless there was some big cheese benefit (unbeknown to the conscious mind). A good “coach” will reconnect a customer to their dreams and close them again on the seminar or product. If that fails, most Seminar Companies have a strict no-refunds policy and basically say screw you, you’re not getting your money back.

Bottom line: James Arthur Ray decided that it was in the best interests of his customers to take them to the brink of death for an OBE (out of body experience). But he did not inform them of this fact and the risks involved in this type of activity. He  counted their  “trust” and his charisma and charm to get him through another Spiritual Warrior ( I wonder if his charms will work on an Arizona Jury?). In my opinion, James Arthur Ray played Russian Roulette with the lives of his clients and the clients lost. They lost their lives.

roulette-revolverJames Ray and his legal team are saying that James Ray informed his customers that they were about to play Russian Roulette and that it was the customers who were holding the gun and who pulled the trigger. That James Ray is NOT guilty of anything wrong. Simply another victim in a horrible accident.

Well Mr Brad Brian & Mr James Ray, you forgot one thing in this little game you are reconstructing as you prepare to defend Mr Ray. James Arthur Ray DID NOT INFORM his customers that this particular version of Russian Roulette was being played with Live Ammunition and not Blanks. It was NOT reasonable to assume that any of JRI’s customers knew that it was the James Ray’s intention to take them to the edge of physical death at the Spiritual Warrior Seminar.

James Ray, you provided the live ammo and loaded the guns. You then put the guns into the hands of unsuspecting customers who loved, adored and trusted you with their lives. You killed them in the exact same way any person who drives drunk takes another human life when they get behind the wheel. More importantly, you did this deliberately and with the specific knowledge that people may die. And this was not the first time someone died from your actions.

ladyjusticeLeave a comment and let me know what you think I should do with the YCSO interview transcripts released yesterday?

    1. Publish Them.
    2. Publish Excerpts & Highlights.
    3. Destroy Them & Leave Poor James Arthur Ray Alone (he’s helped so many people & only killed 4 – Don’t Ya Know!)
    4. Other Ideas?

        Thanks Cassandra,
I’m leaning towards publishing “excerpts” because of the victims and witnesses who never intended to be at the center of this mess. We have personal experience about how media and James fans treat people who are in the public eye. Our agenda is with James Ray, the Fredrickson’s and the self-help industry and not the people he preyed upon.

I think they should be published, but without identifying those who do not wish their names in the public. Thank you for the information you have provided. I can see that your wife, Amy, is a brave and caring person.

Remember, “the Fredricksons” have been just as hypnotized by James as Amy was during her time there. Their actions/inactions are the direct result of the influence they were exposed to. Luckily, Amy snapped out of her trance and hit the road. It’s very probable that Josh and Megan Fredrickson were contributors to a system they were manipulated in to believing in.

@Wizzwup Accuses James Arthur Ray of Sexual Harrassment

Happy Monday. Happy New Year. Happy Hummers

@Wizzwup (twitter account was removed – screen shot below) accuses James Arthur Ray of Sexual Misconduct & Harassment to start 2010.

My response to Wizzwup is that if indeed my wife gave James Arthur Ray anything under the desk (which she did not), he’s would have been one happy man. I know this for a fact! :D

@Wizzwup, if you have knowledge of any other employees @JRI delivering “sexual favors” to James Ray,  please do share this information as a comment on this site.

Also, anyone else having knowledge of sexual misconduct & harassment by JAR as claimed by @Wizzwup, please post it here or use my confidential contact form. I will protect your identity and inform you when any Sexual Harassment Lawsuit is filed against James Arthur Ray.

    amyhall-wizzup

As a personal note: I take Abuses of Power by James Arthur Ray, Seminar Gurus, Employers, Supervisors very seriously. There are many people that feel trapped in their jobs and have to tolerate unwelcome sexual advances and abusive employment practices to provide for their families.

Specifically, when I see the results of James Ray’s Spiritual Warrior Seminar (3 dead) and Creating Absolute Wealth (1 dead), I have no problem imagining that he and the JRI Leadership were feeling “above the law” and lowly and mundane laws of sexual misconduct and labor law do not apply to them. The evidence for the JRI leadership team power trip is the cover up of Colleen Conaway’s death.

I would have never believed Ray, et al capable of the results which are currently prevalent in the public. Now, there seems to be merit for virtually any misconduct be James Arthur Ray and his cast of idiots.

The Seminar Industry, Coaches and Gurus are Out of Control

    SEMINAR BUYER’S BEWARE

schmuckDon’t be a schmuck! Here is the legal document that JRI customers signed to participate at Spiritual Warrior in 2009. The issue that I have is this document was not received by the JRI customers until after their 3 day refund period had expired. In other words, a customer refusing to sign this document could not attend and would NOT receive a refund for the seminar.

Documents like these are common in business and in my opinion allow for “Gurus” like James Arthur Ray to develop God complexes and exhibit “above the law” behaviors at the cost of their customers. While this example uses James Arthur Ray and his Seminar Company, these are common practices in the Seminar and Coaching Industry.

Spiritual Warrior Release, Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, Indemnity Agreement and Disclaimer

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. BY SIGNING THIS AGREEMENT YOU ARE WAIVING ALL RIGHTS TO COMPENSATION IN CASE OF INJURY.

In consideration of being permitted to participate in the Spiritual Warrior event (the “Event”) and being granted access to the premises where the Event will be conducted, and for other good and valuable consideration, I agree to release, waive and discharge James Ray International, Inc. (the “Company”), its principals, directors, shareholders, employees, agents, promoters, independent contractors, sponsors, volunteer assistants, associated coaches, and others associated with the Company, or any of them (the “Releasees”), from all liability to the undersigned for any loss or damage, and any claim or demands therefore on account of injury to the undersigned’s person (whether physical, emotional, psychological or otherwise) or property or resulting in death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, relating to the Event, whether sustained during the Event or not.

Author’s Note: You can not sue God or God’s cohorts.

I am fully aware and understand that I will be given the opportunity by the Company to participate in physical, emotional and other activities during the Event, some of which may take place outdoors and/or require the participants to be isolated from one another and/or include very loud music. These activities may include physical exercise (e.g., hiking, swimming, yoga, team games), Holotropic Breathwork (a psychotherapeutic approach believed to allow access to non-ordinary states of consciousness), a sweat lodge ceremony (a ceremonial sauna involving tight, enclosed spaces and intense temperatures), and/or a Vision Quest (a multiday, solitary, personal and spiritual quest in the wilderness without food or water) (the “Activities”). I am fully aware that I may suffer physical, emotional, financial or other injury during any of the Activities and there is and can be no assurance or guarantee regarding my health or safety in connection with my participation in the Activities. I understand that (1) there are inherent risks in the Activities; (2) people may have been seriously injured by participating in the Activities; and (3) if I voluntarily choose to participate in the Activities, there is a risk that I may receive injuries requiring medical attention. I fully understand and acknowledge that there is no requirement whatsoever that I participate in the Activities. If I do choose to participate in any of the Activities, I affirm that I have not been nor will I be coerced or persuaded in any way to do so and I assume full responsibility for and risk of any injury sustained in connection with the Activities, whether caused by the negligence of Releasees or otherwise.

    Author’s NOTE:

    • Notice that prior to the event, Ray requires customers to “affirm” that have not or will not be coerced into participation.
    • Ray mentions no credentials of licensing of mentioned methods and does NOT include appropriate trade marks or service marks.
    • Just like God, Ray can do what he wants to anyone he wants and just try to hold him accountable for the damage he causes.

I also understand that the Company does not purport to offer any medical, psychological, therapeutic, religious, or other professional advice at the Event and that the information provided at the Event is not a substitute for professional psychological or psychiatric care. I agree that under no circumstances shall Releasees be liable to me based on my use or misuse of and/or reliance on any information provided to me at the Event. And I assume full responsibility for and risk of any injury whether personal, financial or otherwise that I might incur based on such use, misuse and/or reliance thereon.

Author’s NOTE: This is evidenced by Ray’s lack of medical staff or medical training. Again, indications that Ray is aware that he is practicing therapy without a license.

Similarly, I understand and acknowledge that meals may be served at irregular and varying times and that Event hours are long and may last from approximately 8:00 a.m. to midnight or later. I also understand and acknowledge that the temperature indoors and outdoors may vary from very cool to balmy and I assume responsibility to dress in a manner that can be adapted to the temperature as necessary for my comfort. I also understand and acknowledge that smoking areas may not be available on the premises of the Event. I further understand that I may have the opportunity during the Event to engage in discussions regarding products, businesses or business opportunities with other attendees. I acknowledge that any decision to engage in a business relationship with an attendee, or with a person or entity in any way relating to my association with an attendee, is entirely my own choice. Accordingly, I assume full responsibility for any loss, whether financial or otherwise, that I might incur as a result of any such relationship.

Author’s NOTE: Seminar Companies regularly endorse and cross promote other seminar companies (ie The relationship between James Ray and Bill Harris of Holosync). Typically these are commissions paid for these endorsements.

    Spiritual Warrior Participant Guide

I expressly agree in no event shall the Releasees be liable to me, whether the claim be in tort, contract or otherwise for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages (even if the Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages).
I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Releasees and each of them from any loss, liability, damage or cost they may incur due to my participation in the Event or in any way related to my presence on the premises of the Event, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise.

Author’s NOTE: CYA statement that says, just in case you do sue me and I lose, you don’t get any extra money to punish me for the harm I caused you.

I agree not to record by audio, video, photographic or any other means, any portion of the Event. I also understand that all information and materials provided in connection with the Event, including but not limited to workbooks and other written materials, trademarks, logos, graphics and images (the “Materials”), are the copyrighted works and other forms of intellectual property of the Company. I understand and agree that I will not use the information or Materials provided at the Event for any purpose other than for my personal use and benefit. I understand and agree that I may not distribute, transmit, display or broadcast in any manner the information or Materials for any purpose.
I further expressly agree that this agreement is to be governed by the law of the State of California, without regard to conflicts of law doctrines, and the release, waiver of liability, assumption of risk, indemnity and disclaimer provided herein are intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the law of the State of California and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall continue in full legal
    force and effect.

Author’s NOTE: Seminar Companies try to protect their rights at any cost. Even though most seminars have “sourced” their information from other companies. By changing 20% or more of other’s copyrighted materials and new copyrights protect the material as their own.

I acknowledge that I have been given the opportunity by the Company to ask questions regarding any aspect of this Release, Waiver, Assumption of Risk, Indemnity Agreement and Disclaimer. By signing below, I acknowledge that I have carefully and completely read and fully understand all aspects of this agreement and voluntarily agree to all of the terms and conditions stated in this document and that in doing so I have not relied
upon any oral representations, statements or inducement apart from statements made expressly herein.

Author’s NOTE: If you don’t agree to these terms you can not do the seminar but you will NOT get your payment refunded.

    Signature & Witness blanks below…

    ###

Resignation Letter by Amy Hall to JRI after James Arthur Ray Killings

amyhallatjristaffeventAmy Hall, former James Arthur Ray Employee

Amy is my wife and one of the victims of James Arthur Ray’s obsession with death which has resulted in 4 people dead, many injuries and lost jobs.

Amy gave her resignation letter, in person to Rebecca “Becca” Callaway. Becca was Amy’s immediate Supervisor at JRI. This letter is our electronic copy pictured in the Crime Scene Photos on Megan Fredrickson’s Desk. She resigned at about 5:00 PM on October 13 after making sure her “desk” and open tasks were in order.

Amy called the Yavapai County Sheriff about 6:15 Pm the same day concerned that evidence in the case may be destroyed by JRI employees.

It is accurate that Amy was not aware of Colleen Conaway’s death until after she quit JRI.

For the record, Amy & I both want the Seminar Industry and “Professional” Coaches licensed and regulated. In addition, we are in receipt of a “cease and desist” letter from Nancy Bertrando of Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP regarding my blogging about James Arthur Ray’s character and how he ran his company. We are not sure whether Bertrando was the attorney who advised JRI in other HR matters, but Amy has filed a Labor Board Complaint against JRI for unpaid overtime and never delivering her final paycheck. JRI classified Amy’s job as customer service rep and receptionist as “exempt” to avoid paying her overtime. JRI did not appear for the mediation where a California EDD mediator informed Amy her job class was certainly NOT an exempt job. Her Labor Board Hearing will not be for 6 months so she may never see the wages she is due and entitled to receive.

It is our opinion that most Seminar Companies are “in it only for the money” and many Live Seminars and Professional Coaches are practicing therapy without a license. They do so under the guise of “Education”, “Information” and “Coaching”. But anyone can hang out a shingle as coach and/or sell seminars regardless of their experience or credentials.

terry-hall-wife-amyTo contact Amy use the contact form at http://bizsayer.com/contact/ – I screen Amy’s contacts. She has received several nasty messages from former JRI employees. I will not forward those to her unless she requests to see them. Amy cares deeply for people and wants to do her best to make sure that the Seminar Industry and Coaches do no more harm (physically, financially and/or emotionally) and stop hiding behind one sided contracts and educational disclaimers.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. Colleen deserved better than what JRI did to her. And I hold James and Megan Fredickson personally responsible for her death. James because he couldn’t see through his ego and Megan because she did NOTHING to make the seminar a safe space for people to attend – No emergency medical or psychological help standing by. They’re both equally responsible for the tragedy that has occurred. I do think that we’ll see at least James in court. Yavapai County, AZ is a very conservative place I don’t think he’ll have many ‘friends’ there.

Are the San Diego PD going to reopen Colleen’s case? Because they really should. The more I hear the dirtier JRI becomes.

Thank you for your support. Please let me know if there is any way I can help you and Colleen.

      thank you Amy for being a person with character and principles.Being an insider in the JRI biz and speaking up is going to prevent this kind of travesty from happening again.I have followed and blogged on JAR’s fan site on facebook (until he removed it)since Oct.and continue to speak out about it today.I was at a free seminar in vegas and witnessed first hand what a piece of work this guy is ,and how he manipulated people using tried and true (deviant and methodical)methods to capture imnocent,nieve people and their money.After that seminar and the subsequent tragedy days after,I have felt compelled to speak out.So to see your bravery and righteousness is inspirational to many.You have ALOT of support you aren’t even aware of.Hang tough.Dede[;

      Hi Dede,
Thank you so much for your support.

Although this isn’t just about James Ray. It’s also about how the event was badly mismanaged by JRI by not having emergency personal and equipment instantly available and their on site staff trained in CPR and first aid. I personally think there maybe a good case against Megan Fredrickson, accessory before the fact. Because she didn’t plan properly for the emergency medical situations, that based on the history of the event, were going to happen. Staging and producing the events were her responsibility.

After reading the “white papers” Mr. Ray has sent to me, It sadly appears Mr. Ray did create and then fail to perceive the risks for the following reasons:

By conducting a fast before the retreat, the bodies of the participants were immediately put at risk. One meal does not allow time for the body to recover its resources before a sweat lodge event which is in itself an already a highly stressful situation for the body. It is common sense that if you break a leg you don’t go jumping around on it. If your body is physically depleted and stressed you don’t then put it through additional stress and depletion.

It is a medical disclosure in the use and sale of most SAUNAs’ NOT to exceed 15 minutes. The sweat lodge was set up to be conducted for almost 2 hours. The participants were not informed that 15 minutes was “reasonable” nor were they informed of risks of going for longer than 15 minutes. Mr. Ray is depending on a signed release but did not give participants adequate information to make an informed decision. Since participants were not given fair notice of the 15 minutes or educated with the difference between sweating normally and physical distress- they had no idea what to expect, and so they depended on Mr. Ray to discern what was “normal” for the sweat lodge. The human body gives signs of distress long be it shuts down. Mr. Ray gave the impression the physical symptoms of distress were just a part of the normal process (but they were not) and so the participants ignored their own bodies and trusted Mr. Ray’s faulty logic.

“Volunteer” Registered Nurse: Mr. Ray makes an effort to emphasize that there was
a Registered Nurse on duty but the fact the nurse was actually a volunteer brings up several questions. Did the volunteer know she was there in the capacity of emergency medical staff? It appears the nurse being there was a lucky coincidence since Mr. Ray did not intentionally hire or provide for a qualified medical person who was trained to handle and understand sweat lodges specifically. What kind of nurse was the volunteer? Was she even qualified to perform medical services in Arizona? Despite participants paying nearly $10,000 Mr. Ray couldn’t afford to hire medical personnel for $200 for that part of the day?

Mr. Ray has repeatedly failed to understand the compounded psychological impacts of his methods on his participant’s ability to make independent decisions. For instance, in addition to tiring out the participants with marathon seminar sessions lasting 10-16 hours (which is well documented to alter a person’s ability to make sound judgments); the series of exercises and lectures Mr. Ray performs is designed to lead the participant to unquestioning authority of James Ray. The role of playing “God” even for a few moments is only one of the many ways Mr. Ray sets up the psychological and subconscious inclination to become a follower. Mr. Ray used throughout his courses methods from NLP, hypnosis and other fields which are designed and specialize in providing influential suggestions on the participants. Even, when done with good intentions for the participant’s spiritual growth, it still sets up James Ray as the person of knowledge who doesn’t need to be questioned. In fact, it makes it worse because the participants will take most of what Mr. Ray says as in their best interest, even when Mr. Ray is wrong.

“Free to leave” means the participants had full knowledge of what was happening to their bodies and could make a fully informed decision that was not influenced by any party. The participants at the sweat lodge lacked both the information and the “freedom” to leave feeling like exiting the sweat lodge was a failure of their journey. With $10,000 at stake, the relief of all their life problems if they stayed inside; the lack of information that their bodies were in distress from the fast; the lack of information that a sauna of any form was only recommended for 15 minutes not 2 hours; the trust in Mr. Ray that they were safe along with his tremendous psychological influence while he was prompting them to keep going past their physical limits is just a few of the multiple reasons that the deaths do appear to be negligent homicide.

The fact, Mr. Ray tried to defend himself by claiming to be a preacher’s son in the white papers was extremely odd given even a preacher’s son can have an ego and make mistakes. Mr. Ray’s continued attempts to set himself up as above reproach is one of the problems with the entire situation. There has been a serious lack of accountability and Mr. Ray continues to be blinded to his own contribution to this tragedy.

Mr. Ray attempts to claim that there have been a few sweat lodge deaths around the world in the past and no one was criminally convicted. Well sirs, in the recent past men were able to rape their wives without criminal conviction. That law was changed and perhaps your information shows instead that it’s long past due that there is accountability in sweat lodge deaths.

Mr. Ray likes to consistently quote something to the effect of “No one is to blame, but they are responsible.” I don’t think Mr. Ray intentionally hurt anyone, but I do believe that perhaps his ego got the better of him and he was not able to see the effects of his compounded choices. It’s time Mr. Ray shows some real accountability. The people died because they trusted him, he is failing to see that part of it.
